Head of Patient Safety (Band 8c)

Are you passionate about patient safety and making a real impact? We’re looking for a dynamic and experienced leader to join our client, a London NHS Trust as Head of Patient Safety.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to drive innovation, learning, and continuous improvement in patient safety. You’ll play a vital role in shaping transformation projects, embedding a culture of safety, and leading a dedicated team to enhance patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the Trust patient safety strategy, ensuring alignment with national frameworks such as the NHS Patient Safety Strategy and Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF).
  • Provide expert advice and leadership on patient safety, risk management, and quality improvement.
  • Foster a positive safety culture, ensuring that patient safety is embedded at all levels of the organisation.
  • Work closely with executive teams, clinical leaders, and operational managers to integrate patient safety into service design and delivery.
  • Ensure that learning from serious incidents, near misses, and complaints is embedded across teams and leads to measurable improvements.
  • Support clinical teams in embedding safety improvement initiatives, using evidence-based methodologies such as Human Factors, Just Culture, and Quality Improvement (QI) approaches.
  • Lead and contribute to exciting transformation projects, improving systems, processes, and patient pathways to enhance safety and outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with regional partners, NHSE, and other stakeholders to share best practices and influence system-wide patient safety improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with CQC, NHS England, and other regulatory requirements relating to patient safety.

You will need to demonstrate:

  • Clinical background (Nursing, AHP, Medical, or similar) is preferred
  • Strong experience in patient safety, governance, or quality improvement
  • Leadership and change management expertise
  • Passion for innovation and transformation in healthcare
