The Role:

Long Term Futures is seeking a Caretaker to join a SEND secondary school in East Finchley (N2). The role is vital in ensuring the school remains a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. Working as part of the Facilities Team, the Caretaker will be responsible for site security, maintenance, health and safety compliance, and general repairs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the security of school buildings and grounds, acting as a key holder and providing emergency out-of-hours access if needed
  • Conduct health and safety checks on buildings, equipment, and school grounds in line with COSHH regulations and fire safety guidelines
  • Operate and maintain heating, cooling, lighting, and security systems, including CCTV and alarms
  • Carry out basic maintenance and repairs, including plumbing, carpentry, painting, decorating, and minor electrical work
  • Assist with setting up for school events, moving furniture, and general porterage duties
  • Oversee and liaise with contractors and external service providers for specialist repairs
  • Ensure school vehicles are maintained, including basic upkeep such as refueling, tyre checks, and servicing arrangements
  • Monitor stock levels and report supply needs to the Facilities Manager
  • Support with risk assessments and site compliance procedures
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organised school environment, including responding to urgent cleaning needs (e.g. spills, blocked drains, hazardous waste removal)
  • Provide site supervision during school lettings and events
What We're Looking For:
  • Previous caretaking, site management, or maintenance experience, ideally within a school or public building
  • Strong practical skills in DIY, repairs, and general maintenance
  • Knowledge of COSHH regulations, health & safety compliance, and fire safety
  • Full UK driving license (essential)
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Reliable, proactive, and hands-on approach to daily tasks
  • Willingness to attend mandatory training (e.g., pool plant operator, manual handling, health & safety, asbestos awareness)
  • Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain)
Desirable Skills & Experience:
  • Previous experience working in a school or educational setting
  • Minibus driving experience and/or relevant certification
  • PAT testing qualification and knowledge of fire alarm/burglar alarm systems
  • Knowledge of swimming pool maintenance and water testing
Additional Information:
  • Full-time, permanent role (Monday - Friday, 36 hours per week
  • Based in East Finchley (N2), London
  • Immediate start, with potential for long-term stability
