This role offers a rewarding opportunity to support students who require tailored learning strategies, emotional support and positive behaviour reinforcement to succeed in their education.

About The Role:

As a Secondary SEMH English Teacher, you will be responsible for delivering an engaging and accessible English curriculum to students with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges and additional learning difficulties. You will play a vital role in fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment, helping students to develop their literacy skills, confidence and self-regulation strategies.

Responsibilities of Secondary SEMH English Teacher:

  • Plan and deliver differentiated English lessons that engage and inspire students with SEMH needs.
  • Implement individual learning plans (ILPs) to address students' academic, emotional and behavioural requirements.
  • Create a safe and structured learning environment, promoting positive behaviour and self-regulation strategies.
  • Use a range of teaching techniques to support students who may struggle with conventional learning approaches.
  • Collaborate with pastoral teams, SENCOs and external professionals to ensure holistic student support.
  • Foster student confidence and engagement through creative and adaptive teaching strategies.
  • Assess and track student progress, providing tailored feedback and interventions as necessary.
  • Promote literacy development and a love for learning, making English accessible and relevant to students' experiences.
  • Uphold safeguarding policies and procedures, ensuring student well-being at all times.

The successful candidate will:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent with experience teaching English at secondary level.
  • Proven experience working with students with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges and additional learning difficulties.
  • A strong understanding of differentiated teaching, behaviour management and trauma-informed approaches.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with students, fostering trust and engagement.
  • A proactive and empathetic approach, with excellent communication and de-escalation skills.
  • Experience working in alternative provisions, PRUs, or SEN settings is highly desirable.
  • A commitment to inclusive education, student progress and well-being.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
