Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate BSL (British Sign Language) Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive and diverse educational institution. The BSL Teaching Assistant will work closely with the teaching staff to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and help create an inclusive and accessible learning environment. The positions will start as temporary and have the option to move onto permanent contracts after 12 academic weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, in both individual and group settings
  • Assist in the implementation of educational plans and strategies to support the learning needs of students using BSL
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to ensure the integration of BSL into the curriculum
  • Facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, and other staff members
  • Encourage and promote the use of BSL within the school community to create an inclusive and accessible environment

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL) is essential
  • Previous experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing is preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting diverse learners
  • Relevant certification or training in BSL is a plus

Day-to-day

  • Assisting students in understanding and completing classroom tasks using BSL
  • Providing one-on-one or small group support to students
  • Collaborating with teachers to adapt materials and resources to support BSL users
  • Facilitating communication between students and staff members
  • Promoting the use of BSL within the school community through various activities and events
