Principal Climate and Net Zero Officer

Location: Ealing, London

Salary: £50,574 - £52,584 per annum (inclusive) Grade 12

Tackling the climate crisis is one of the council’s top priorities. They’re looking for a motivated and experienced climate and energy professional to join their team as Principal Climate and Net Zero Officer. You’ll be part of the skilled and passionate Climate Action & Sustainability Team, reporting to the Net Zero Manager, and playing a key role in climate initiatives in the council and across the borough.

The Role

Their work is orientated around Ealing’s Climate and Ecological Emergency Strategy, which aims to make Ealing carbon neutral by 2030. They’ve made progress, but there’s more to do.

They’re seeking someone passionate about climate action and sustainability (this part is important), skilled or knowledgeable in most of carbon and energy management, climate science, climate finance, project management, and stakeholder engagement.

You’ll need to be organised, committed, and a creative team player able to hold others to account and who is a natural at fostering collaboration.

The successful candidate will be working in a directorate full of people dedicated to achieving great things, and in an organisation with an appetite for innovation and continuous improvement to ensure they deliver the best for their residents, businesses and visitors.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Successful record of working in a multi-disciplinary environment within the Sustainability/Environmental/Climate sector.
  • Knowledge of project management and the ability to lead and manage projects; familiarity with contract management
  • Knowledge of working in partnership with council services and external bodies such as voluntary groups, external service providers, private sector partners and government agencies to deliver integrated and improved services.
  • Knowledge of relevant policy, legislation or guidance associated with Net Zero, Climate Change, Air Quality, Sustainability and / or other environmental factors.
  • Proven communication skills, with the proven ability to present to, influence and convene a diverse range of internal and external audiences using a variety of media and approaches.
  • Proven ability to win funding via development, approval and submission of bids.
  • Demonstrable effective use of a variety of ICT systems.
  • Ability to inspire others to make things happen.
  • Understanding of equal opportunities and diversity issues and policies, and health and safety issues.
  • Experience in one or more of: stakeholder engagement; sustainable development; environment or climate policy.
  • Experience and understanding of partnership working, regional challenges and stakeholder management.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Experience of communicating effectively with public and private sector stakeholders, e.g. government departments or local authorities and senior management in business.
  • A degree or equivalent vocational qualification in Environmental, Transport, Sustainability, Marketing/Comms, Planning or other experience relevant to the person specification.
