Title: Freelance Product Designer

Start Date: Monday 6th January

Contract Length: 6 months (with a strong likelihood of extension)

Client: Local London Borough Council

Day Rate: £500 per day (max)

IR35 Status: Inside IR35 (Umbrella company required for invoicing)

Working Arrangement: Hybrid - primarily remote, with occasional visits to their Central London office

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all designs meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards to serve all users effectively.

  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs using tools like Figma, Sketch, or Miro.

  • Leverage analytics, usability testing, and research insights to iterate and improve product designs.

  • Use research and evidence to inform and iterate on design solutions that solve problems effectively.

  • Organize and lead workshops to gather insights, co-design with stakeholders, and refine product visions.

  • Partner with Agile teams to deliver designs in sprints, working closely with developers, user researchers, and other stakeholders.

  • Lead the design of digital products that meet both user and business needs, ensuring they are intuitive, accessible, and aligned with best practices.

Preferred Experience:

  • Contributions to design communities or sharing processes and learnings with teams.

  • Proven ability to deliver within Agile frameworks, contributing to sprint planning and iterative design cycles.

  • Experience conducting usability tests, heuristic evaluations, and utilizing analytics for data-driven design improvements.

  • Strong knowledge of designing for inclusivity, with demonstrable experience meeting public sector accessibility requirements.

  • At least 18 months of experience working on digital projects for local councils or public sector organizations, focusing on either public-facing or internal services.

Role Highlights:

  • Day Rate: £450-£600 per day (depending on experience).
  • Contract Duration: 6-month initial contract, with the possibility of extending for up to 2 years.
  • On-boarding: Comprehensive support during a 4-8 week on-boarding period.
  • Work Setup: Primarily remote, with occasional on-site meetings in London.

Important Details:

  • This role falls inside IR35, requiring invoicing through an Umbrella company (Ltd or Sole Trader arrangements are not permitted).
