New opportunity for a growing holding company for insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory, and investment operations in the claims function. The role is primarily focussed on the broad range of claims emanating from the Marine Liability and Transport and Logistics Underwriting Division, however due to the growth, the role also offers the opportunity to handle claims emanating from the wider Marine and Energy Division.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Drive, through your own work (and, if applicable, through management of any team members), the claims philosophy of being "The most customer focused, nimble and value adding claims team in the market". Achieve this through: agreeing, reviewing and completing your own objectives; your contribution at team meetings; effective oversight of DCAs and service providers; and interaction with key brokers. Passing back any key information in this regard to your team.
  • Be responsible for managing your (and, if applicable, your team members') claims in accordance with the MINT claims and reserving philosophy, the Claims Handling Manual and all regulatory and legislative requirements. Escalating claims to your manager, where appropriate, for input on strategy and/or reserving. Monitor, provide feedback and ensure compliance on KPIs.
  • Drive, facilitate and deliver a customer focused approach to claims which is measurable through speed of service and open, honest and personable communications with all brokers and (re)insureds.
  • Produce good quality and informative narratives and information on key claims and claims developments, and to ensure this is escalated as appropriate to management (whether to your direct manager or beyond), including provision of narratives for inclusion in your team's monthly/quarterly reports.
  • Work closely with the underwriting team, including providing feedback on claims experiences, contract wordings, claims data or feedback for any renewal or new business and interact with placing and claims brokers in order to develop strong relationships and knowledge about the quality of our claims management. Work collaboratively with our Actuarial and Outwards Reinsurance teams, ensuring that they are all apprised of new notifications and significant developments.
  • Work with the underwriters to develop business by participating in client meetings, presenting on topics of interest and attending conferences.
  • Contribute through your own work to achieve the critical metrics set in the annual Claims Business Plan and to identify areas of improvement in the team, as well as provide proactive feedback to the Claims Manager.
  • Treat customers fairly and report any complaints immediately so that these can be addressed quickly. Flag any potential or actual conflict of interest in accordance with our procedures.
  • Show a willingness to lead claims on all classes of business handled by the team, including attending underwriting meetings, learning about the class and developing relationships with key stakeholders in the claims handling process.
  • Asist the Claims Manager with specific ad hoc projects and provide innovative ways of doing things as required. Be willing to assist beyond the day-to-day claims handling to further develop the team and book of business as a whole.

The successful candidate will:

  • Take the lead and management of strategy on a portfolio of complex and/or high value claims and be a point person to the relevant underwriters. Identify and discuss the most common areas and trends in claims causation. Segment and analyse the portfolio to assist in identifying the most profitable sub-segments and those areas where remedial action should be taken. Understand, monitor, provide feedback and ensure compliance on KPIs.
  • Analyse and interpret data to enhance underwriting capabilities (e.g., loss performance and underwriting efficiency). Scope out problems/questions for analysis and work with actuarial/underwriting/claims manager or head of class to investigate.
  • Assist underwriters with the development of policy language to achieve desired coverage and propose wording amendments to manager and/or underwriters.
  • Consistently produce quality work, finding the most efficient and practical means of overcoming challenges and demonstrating effective organisational skills.
  • Take ownership and accountability for own development and achievement of goals and actively help others to succeed while demonstrating and promoting inclusive behaviours and attitudes.
  • Understand customer needs and actively solicit and act upon feedback, providing solutions to problems. Build relationships outside of the claims function including u/ws, brokers and key legal providers.
  • Negotiate complex coverage matters calmly and effectively in the interests of all parties. Competently represent MINT in the management of market and broker meetings.
  • Understand wholesale underwriting and claims business plans and how claims actions impact overall company performance.
  • Assist in the training of junior members of the claims team. Providing insight into specific claims aspects and helping them develop their own capabilities.
  • Background and knowledge in Marine or General Liability is preferred
  • Achieved ACII accreditation, or be working towards it.
