My client is seeking a dedicated Legal Billing Coordinator to join their criminal department within the Finance team. This role is crucial for converting work in progress into bills and processing bills accurately. The role will be acting in many high profile and complete cases. The role therefore involves billing in a range of cases, often with novel or complex issues.
Day-to-day of the role:- Undertake Crime lower billing, including police station and magistrates fixed fee bills as well as non-standard magistrates’ bills.
- Prepare bills and process claims for submission to the Legal Aid Agency (LAA).
- Submit monthly criminal contract claims to the LAA and handle fee earner queries.
- Submit claims for Costs out of Central Funds where Defence Costs Orders have been obtained for private clients.
- Liaise with fee earners following the assessment of publicly funded bills to determine if the assessment will be appealed and ensure timely submission of appeals.
- Post criminal legal aid bills on the firm’s case management system, accurately allocating costs to fee earners.
- Maintain detailed electronic records of all claims on the bills tracker to support cash flow forecasting and budgeting.
- Reconcile crime submissions both monthly and yearly.
- Assist with the preparation of interim and final bills for privately funded matters, if required.
- Close completed matters and process them for archiving.
- Assist in the preparation of training and guidance materials for fee earners and team members.
- Attend monthly billing meetings with fee earners to review work in progress and discuss billing policies and procedures.
- Confident with good influencing and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond well to deadlines.
- Organised, efficient, and able to use own initiative.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and numeracy.
- Strong IT skills and familiarity with legal billing and case management systems.
- Legal billing experience
- AAT qualification is desirable but not essential
