About The RoleTeam – Underwriting & Claims - LifeWorking Pattern - This role can be worked remotely with regular travel expected to either our Vitality Bournemouth, Stockport or London Offices. Full time, 37.5 hours per week. We are happy to discuss flexible working! What this role is all about:Underwriters evaluate risk factors to determine risk acceptance and/or the appropriate price offered, so that Vitality writes and retains business in line with its risk appetite.As an Underwriter, you will work mostly independently, with minimal guidance.  You will use existing processes to solve routine or standard problems.  You will work across several teams, mostly at your own level and may act as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Key Actions
  • Deliver high quality work in line with the life underwriting philosophy and guidelines and agreed deadlines and/or cost effectiveness
    • working independently within established practices, given processes, rules and regulations, delivering the work in line within agreed time frames
    • starting to build subject matter expertise in the assigned areas
    • take ownership of and are proactive in providing solutions to problems and analyse, evaluate and advise independently.
    • solve routine or standard problems following procedures or guidelines.
    • Can be assigned more complex work which is performed under supervision
  • Engage stakeholders / customers
    • provides information and/or advice to others relating specifically to the task at hand.
    • convey and explain information and opinion fluently and coherently both in written and oral communications.  
    • manage verbal referrals, taking and dealing with telephony-based queries. 
  • Build and transfer skills and knowledge
    • Able to work independently within specific area/s of underwriting.
    • stay abreast of changes and apply this to work as required.
    • take responsibility for active participation in both formal and informal learning initiatives. T
    • assist other Underwriters to develop skills and knowledge by working closely with them as required.
    • share ideas and collaborate with colleagues to ensure best practise.  They may be working towards additional role-relevant accreditation / certification, as agreed with their manager.

  • Experienced underwriter with in-depth medical and financial knowledge in respect of Life cover, Serious Illness and Income Protection products.
  • Good working knowledge of reinsurance & regulatory procedures/requirements within the industry.
