Venn Group’s public sector legal team is working with a London Borough Council, seeking an experienced Contracts and Procurement Lawyer to join their legal team. This position offers the opportunity to provide expert legal support on a wide range of contractual, procurement, and governance matters, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation while assisting senior stakeholders in making informed decisions. The role operates on a hybrid basis, requiring 1 day per week office attendance.

Job Overview:

The successful candidate will be responsible for advising on contractual and procurement-related legal matters, working closely with council departments and external partners. Key duties will include drafting, negotiating, and reviewing contracts, managing legal risks, and ensuring compliance with the Public Contracts Regulations 2015 and the Procurement Act 2023. Additionally, the role involves supporting corporate projects, governance arrangements, and data protection matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist legal advice on contract and procurement law across the council’s operations
  • Draft, negotiate, and review a variety of commercial, construction, and service contracts
  • Advise on contractual disputes, risk assessment, and contract management
  • Assist with the development of procurement strategies, ensuring compliance with legal requirements
  • Support governance functions by advising on corporate decision-making processes
  • Counsel senior officers and councillors on procurement and governance issues
  • Offer guidance on data protection (UK GDPR) and Freedom of Information (FOI) compliance, particularly in relation to contracts

Requirements:

  • Qualified solicitor, barrister, or FILEx Legal Executive with relevant experience in contract and procurement law
  • Proven expertise in public sector procurement law, particularly in relation to Public Contracts Regulations 2015 and the Procurement Act 2023
  • Strong background in commercial contract drafting and negotiations
  • Experience advising on contractual disputes, governance, and risk management
  • Knowledge of data protection and FOI legislation in the context of contractual arrangements
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with senior stakeholders
