About the Role:Southwark Council is seeking an experienced Civil Litigation Lawyer to join its Legal Services team on a temporary basis. This role involves providing high-quality legal advice and representation on a range of general civil litigation and advisory matters.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide expert legal advice to the Cabinet, Committees, Council bodies, and elected Members.
- Handle a broad range of civil litigation matters, including:
- Landlord and tenant disputes (commercial and residential)
- Commercial debt recovery and contractual disputes
- Disputes related to non-payment of community care charges
- Inquests and injunctions
- Disputes relating to electronic communications
- Complex non-domestic rates and council tax issues
- Judicial Review claims
- Building safety matters
- Attend Committees, working groups, and project meetings to provide legal support.
- Draft legal documents, including agreements, pleadings, and contracts.
- Represent the Council at courts and tribunals where required.
- Ensure compliance with statutory obligations and good governance practices.
- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive (CILEX).
- Strong experience in civil litigation, ideally within a local government or public sector environment.
- Ability to manage a varied caseload with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail.
- Effective communication and advocacy skills.
- Work on complex and high-profile cases within a supportive legal team.
- Competitive hourly rate of £48 per hour (Inside IR35).
- Hybrid working available (subject to Council policies).
