Our client, a local government organisation, is seeking a skilled and experienced Principal Lawyer to join their team. This organisation provides a wide range of services and works closely with residents, businesses, and visitors to the Borough.

Responsibilities:

  • Managing a team of lawyers and providing expertise and guidance on local government law, including civil and criminal litigation, regulatory matters, housing law, and corporate governance.
  • Handling a caseload of legal work and acting as a subject expert.
  • Supporting strategic projects and ensuring a solutions-focused approach.
  • Carrying out advocacy when necessary.
  • Attending meetings and providing legal and governance advice.
  • Producing reports for council meetings and decision-making processes.
  • Working occasional evenings, weekends, and public holidays to meet service requirements.

Essential (Knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience):

  • Extensive experience in local government law, specifically in civil litigation, housing law, and corporate governance.
  • Knowledge of the workings of local government and the challenges facing the sector.
  • Practising certificate as a solicitor, barrister, or chartered legal executive.
  • Strong people management skills, including motivation, performance, and capability.
  • Leadership experience within a Shared Service environment.
  • Ability to deliver service improvements and drive transformational change.

Desirable (Knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience):

  • Knowledge and experience in areas such as procurement and contracts, planning, and development.
  • Understanding of the financial, legal, and political context of local government.

Technologies:

  • Proficient in the use of legal software and technology, Microsoft packages, and competent use of a computer.
