Cleaning and Waste Management - Building Services — Events and Conference Venue - East London - up to £85k + benefits + 20% Bonus

We’re on the hunt for a dedicated Head of Cleaning and Waste Management to oversee waste management operations within this iconic venue. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing waste reduction strategies, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and fostering a culture of sustainability within the venue and with our clients for their events.

Reporting to the Director of Venue Operations you will become an integral part of the multi-disciplinary Building Services team who are responsible for the maintenance and operational undertaking of the venue.

Responsibilities as the Head of Cleaning and Waste Management will include:

Key Responsibilities

- Lead, mentor, and manage direct reports and the wider Cleaning and Waste Management teams effectively, including hiring, training, coaching, and performance evaluating to continue to attract and retain a high calibre team.

- Create and deliver a long-term vision for the Cleaning and Waste Management teams that ensures maximum customer satisfaction for organisers, exhibitors, and visitors whilst actively meeting our ESG targets and realising additional revenue.

- Develop a new area of specialism and expertise for 'waste management’ as a distinct subject, and work with the Waste Manager to proactively develop this innovation for the business.

- Manage Capex planning, budgeting, forecasting and cost control for cleaning supplies, equipment, waste management and 3rd party staff schedules.

- Maximise the potential ancillary revenues throughout the planning cycle, thus directly impacting the financial performance of the business. Ensure a profitable balance between event cost and event delivery through effective cost control measures and monthly forecasting, maximising revenue, whilst still delivering first class service.

- Monitor and enforce compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, regularly update and analyse risk assessments and method statements related to Cleaning and Waste Management.

- Implement sustainable practices to reduce waste generation, increase recycling rates, and minimize environmental impact.

- Conduct regular inspections to ensure cleanliness, sanitation, and proper waste disposal practices throughout.

- Forward planning to establish a Planned Preventative Maintenance programme for annual / biannual cleaning regimes.

- Develop and implement Cleaning and Waste Management policies, procedures, and standards to always ensure a high-quality service delivery.

- Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to understand their Cleaning and Waste Management needs and expectations, where appropriate create event specific Cleaning and Waste Management plans in collaboration with our clients.

- Evaluate event success and effectiveness through effective debriefs, post-event analysis and feedback subsequently implement improvements for future events.

- Effectively manage Cleaning and Waste Management teams shift schedules alongside the Operations Planning Manager, actively plan & schedule to reduce the number of TOIL days accrued or overtime payments made ensuring staff welfare is a key priority.

- Analyse performance metrics and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

- Provide regular reports and updates to Director of Venue Operations and other members of the Leadership team on performance metrics as agreed or requested.

- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and adjust plans as needed to achieve targets.

- May be required to carry out ad hoc responsibilities depending on the department needs.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

- Previous leadership experience in Cleaning and Waste Management at a similar sized venue or equivalent.

- Knowledge of sustainability principles and experience implementing sustainable practices in cleaning and waste management.

- Strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, waste management practices, and environmental regulations.

- Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex situations and make strategic decisions.

- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively under pressure.

- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities whilst maintaining longer term strategic focus.

Please note: this is predominantly a Monday to Friday role (40 hours/week), however occasional weekend working may be necessary at times to support higher profile events.
