2nd Line Field Engineer - North London - £40k


Position Overview:

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated 2nd line engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in IT support and network management, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical problems. This position focuses on delivering advanced technical support, managing IT infrastructure, and ensuring the smooth operation of clients' technology environments, primarily in the education sector with occasional work in the commercial sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide advanced technical support and troubleshooting for hardware, software, and network issues both remotely and on-site.
  • Conduct system administration tasks including user management, backups, and system monitoring.
  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot network devices such as switches, routers, firewalls, and VPNs.
  • Manage and support virtualization environments (VMware, Hyper-V) and cloud services (Azure).
  • Implement and maintain security best practices, including patch management, antivirus, and firewall configurations.
  • Assist in planning, designing, and implementing IT projects and system upgrades.
  • Monitor and maintain server and network performance to ensure high availability and reliability.
  • Document technical procedures, configurations, and issue resolutions.
  • Work with Level 1 support and other team members to resolve complex issues efficiently.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers and support staff.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergency support requests as needed.

Technical Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a Level 2 IT support role.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows and macOS client and server operating systems.
  • Proficiency in networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and VPNs.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure).
  • Experience with Next-Gen Firewalls (WatchGuard, Fortinet, etc.).
  • Experience managing Microsoft 365 and Google Suites.
  • Experience with Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions.
  • Proficient with migrations from on-premise to hybrid/cloud.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills for complex technical issues.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices.
  • Industry certifications (CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, CCNA, MCSA) are highly desirable.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Proven track record of collaborative solutions delivery.
  • Commercial awareness for all "aaS" models.
  • Services-led project management.
  • Document and project writing abilities.

Working Hours & Remuneration:

  • Full-Time
  • Onsite, with some home-based work (to be discussed at interview)
  • Must be willing to travel to clients
  • 8-hour shift within core hours of 8:30 to 18:00 (shift assignment to be discussed at interview)
