Payroll Officer

We are recruiting on behalf of our client for an experienced Payroll Officer to join their finance team on a temp-to-perm basis. This role has been designed to bring someone in as quickly as possible, with the opportunity to transition into a permanent position after 15 weeks, subject to a successful assignment. This offers the chance to secure long-term benefits and protections available to permanent employees.

This is a fast-paced and high-volume role, requiring excellent attention to detail and the ability to process large numbers of transactions efficiently while maintaining accuracy. As a customer-focused position, the Payroll Officer will be responsible for handling queries from a high volume of employees at all levels, providing high-quality advice and support on a range of payroll matters. Ensuring that all payments are processed accurately and on time, in compliance with payroll legislation, will be a key priority.

Working under the Head of Strategic Finance (Improvements, Systems, and Transactions), the Payroll Officer should bring a continuous improvement mindset, always looking for ways to enhance processes, streamline workflows, and ensure compliance with financial regulations.

The successful candidate will manage payroll calculations, reconciliations, and off-system pay adjustments, ensuring smooth payroll operations in a complex and demanding environment. They must be confident in explaining technical payroll processes clearly to employees and stakeholders, ensuring a positive and efficient payroll experience for all. The ability to prioritise workloads effectively, work collaboratively with colleagues, and escalate governance or compliance issues when necessary is essential.

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical knowledge of payroll systems, including experience handling large-scale payroll transactions in a high-volume environment. While sector-specific experience is not required, an understanding of public sector payroll structures and working within a large organisation would be beneficial.
