The role
Are you passionate about shaping spaces, preserving heritage, and delivering quality design in an inner-city setting? Southwark Council is seeking a talented Urban Design and Conservation Officer to join our dedicated team on a 12-month fixed term basis who will contribute to the conservation and enhancement of our diverse borough.What you’ll do:
- Project Consultation: Provide expert design and conservation insights on a range of projects, from small to medium-sized developments.
- Policy Management: Lead and manage policy programs and projects, ensuring alignment with council priorities.
- Documentation & Decision-Making: Prepare design and spatial policy documents and review planning applications to shape impactful outcomes.
- Collaboration: Work closely with multi-disciplinary colleagues across Planning Policy, Development Management, and the Property Team, driving cross-functional projects with a cohesive approach.
- Innovation & Improvement: Champion sustainable design, service enhancement, and conservation solutions that meet the needs of our vibrant communities.
How will you make an impact:We need dynamic and experienced Urban Design and Conservation Officer who is passionate about public space design and is driven to make a difference to community environments who will bring a blend of the following:
- Proven experience in high-quality development within diverse, urban settings, with a track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.
- Deep knowledge and understanding of planning acts, statutory planning processes, and city-specific conservation needs.
- Skilled at working within a multi-disciplinary team to achieve shared goals.
- Demonstrable expertise in medium-to-large scale design and conservation projects.
- Degree level education (or equivalent) and eligibility for membership in a relevant professional institute.
- In-depth familiarity with town planning, design, and conservation policies for urban settings.
- Experience in handling complex projects, meeting deadlines, and delivering technical work within a structured timeline.
- Enjoy a balanced approach with flexible home working, alongside travel to our London Bridge HQ.
