We are seeking to appoint a Science Technician. The successful candidate will support the learning of students by providing assistance with the practical requirements of the curriculum.

About the department

The whole Science department achieves outstanding outcomes for its pupils and takes pride in being creative and dynamic in its teaching and enrichment. Pupils are taught separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics classes from Year 9, by a subject specialist. There is a strong up-take of Triple Science at GCSE Science. A-Level Physics has a high take-up and achievement is promoted at all levels; every year a significant number of students secure places to study Sciences at university. The department takes an active lead in the whole-school STEM programme, including CREST Awards.

The 6th Form is a dynamic and exciting place to work and learn, serving 330 students, a mixture of boys and girls, some who were previously St Marylebone Year 11s and others who join us new in Year 12. Every member of staff plays a role in making the 6th Form a community in its own right, as well as promoting its connections with Key Stages 3 and 4.

Key responsibilities

supporting the preparation of apparatus, materials and solutions, and setting up equipment and apparatus for use in all areas of Science

Reporting to the Senior Technician, for the provision of technical services in the department as directed

cleaning and routine care of apparatus and equipment to ensure a high standard of safety and hygiene

participation in the organisation and storage of equipment, apparatus and materials, including chemicals, for all Sciences

participation in the stock checking and replenishment of laboratories as advised by Teaching and Technical staff

participation in the preparation, setting up and removal of equipment for practical examinations and in the provision of a technical service during practical examinations

participation in the general upkeep of the laboratories and in general laboratories tidiness, safety and compliance with COSHH regulations, and security

participation in the provision of audio-visual and course materials for Science lessons which will include photocopying and filing of resources

interaction with staff and pupils to help deliver the Science curriculum

Person Specification

Be enthusiastic and willing to learn

Be friendly, positive and approachable

Have the ability to plan ahead, work safely, methodically and accurately

Be able to liaise effectively with both pupils and staff and be willing to work flexibly within the school environment and as part of a team

Have good knowledge, understanding and interest in all aspects of Science, which could include a particular specialism

Have the ability to multi-task in a fast paced department whilst maintaining a calm and professional manner at all times

Have a responsible and conscientious approach to Health & Safety

Have appropriate qualifications in Science (A Level or equivalent in Science subject(s) as a minimum)

Further science qualifications (i.e. degree) are desirable, but not essential

Previous experience as a school science technician is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
