Role Summary
This is an exciting time to join a busy rail company as an Assistant Service Engineer within rolling stock engineering. This is a temporary to permanent position with full training provided internally. Upon successful completion of the probationary and training period the individual will be offered a permanent contract of employment and an ongoing development and training plan.
As an Assistant Service Engineer you will be responsible for supporting the repair, upgrade and reactive maintenance of an operational fleet of rail vehicles. This will include carrying out basic maintenance and repair tasks alongside the production team and ensuring that the service engineers have the necessary support to complete their work.
The role
- Carry out engineering tasks as directed by the team.
- Follow all necessary depot health and safety requirements.
- Follow all engineering quality standards of work and maintain good reporting of asset assessment, work completed and materials used as requested.
- Maintain good communication with production team members to ensure all work is completed and they are fully supported.
- Highlight any concerns relating to fleet condition or provided parts/materials or opportunities for improvement in reports where identified.
- Carry out general housekeeping duties around the Depot.
- Assist with a variety of engineering and depot maintenance tasks
- Carry out first level fault finding and visual inspections of fixtures and fittings
- Prepare trains for works to be carried out
- Ensure the proper use and preparation of tooling and equipment at the start and end of each shift, promptly reporting any faulty equipment and actively participating in maintenance procedures.
- Help manage the inventory levels of materials, machines, and tools, promptly reporting any shortages.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience or academic training in mechanical fitting or assembly
- Good level of Maths and English – ideally Level 2 functional skills or pass at GCSE
- Ability to read and follow work instructions and read diagrams
- Ability to work efficiently to deadlines
- Exposure to electrical engineering principles or wiring is beneficial but not essential
- Able to pass Personal Track Safety course or Depot Track Safety course.
- Basic knowledge of IT skills
- Ability to pass a Drugs & Alcohol test and Rail Standard Medical Assessment
