We are seeking a Head of Housing Needs & Refugee Services to provide strategic leadership and management for a local authority in SE London. This role is crucial for directing the council’s efforts in housing allocations, homelessness prevention, and refugee resettlement, ensuring efficient service delivery and financial management within a budget of up to £25m.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Provide strategic leadership, direction, and management of the Council’s Housing Needs and Refugee Service.
  • Offer corporate advice on all services within the Housing Needs & Refugee Service and represent the Council on cross-borough and London-wide groups.
  • Manage, control, and monitor service budgets and contracted services to ensure strong financial planning and value for money.
  • Lead the accommodation function for households in housing need, including temporary accommodation and access to the private rented sector.
  • Ensure all council-managed accommodations are compliant, in good condition, and that households receive necessary support.
  • Drive change and transformation to continuously improve the services.
  • Lead the Council’s initiative to reduce the number of households in temporary accommodation and manage budgets effectively to stay within corporate limits.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in strategic leadership within housing needs or refugee services.
  • Strong understanding of housing allocations, homelessness prevention, and resettlement services.
  • Experience managing large budgets and delivering services within financial constraints.
  • Ability to represent and negotiate on behalf of the council in various forums.
  • Excellent risk management, performance monitoring, and value for money skills.
