Key Requirements:

  • Safeguarding training (preferably to DSL Level 3) and experience
  • Experience working within an educational establishment (preferably with age 16+)
  • Experience of CP/CIN support
  • Experience with external referrals, including MASH
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Understanding of roles and boundaries
  • Ability to look after own wellbeing

Role Overview: Safeguarding & Welfare Officers play a leading role in ensuring the personal development of students by promoting awareness of their role in modern society and providing appropriate personal support. This support aims to remove barriers to achievement and maximize potential. The role involves working closely with the Student Services and Curriculum teams to maximize student engagement and success.

Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with curriculum teams to provide pastoral and welfare support to students needing extra support, helping them develop confidence and resilience.
  • Act as part of the safeguarding team, identifying students at risk or experiencing mental ill health who would benefit from support.
  • Support the preparation of students for progression within and from the College.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of enrichment activities and workshops to develop students' understanding of citizenship, British Values, physical, emotional, and mental health, and personal, behavioral, and social skills.
  • Encourage student participation in wider College life, including enrichment and social action, equipping them with skills and attributes needed in modern society.

Key Duties:

  • Work with an allocated caseload of students to identify potential barriers to achievement and develop strategies to address these.
  • Be a named member of the safeguarding team, reporting safeguarding concerns in accordance with College policy.
  • Work with the DSL and Safeguarding Manager to raise awareness and deliver training on safeguarding themes to staff and students.
  • Work with students in groups and one-on-one to help them understand the skills and qualities needed for progress and employability.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor support strategies, referring students to internal and external support agencies as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the delivery of enrichment activities that promote British and College values.
  • Help students comply with College guidelines for behavior and conduct.
  • Ensure students receiving support are allocated the correct risk indicators on safeguarding systems.
  • Liaise with other support services to offer a full range of support for students.
  • Promote students' understanding of their rights and responsibilities as students and citizens.
  • Work as an active member of the Student Services Team, supporting continuous improvement through self-assessment processes.
  • Implement strategies to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Support the Safeguarding Manager in preparing enrichment materials.
  • Liaise with parents, carers, and external agencies to establish effective working relationships.
  • Provide relevant information, advice, and guidance to prospective students during open days, interview sessions, enrolment, and student events.
