Roles and responsibilities - Youth Mentor -Haringey

As a Youth mentor your role consists of assisting vulnerable students who have SEMH or challenging behaviour. Youth Mentors mentor and help identified students. You will support their academic studies as well as their personal development Extra material will be provided by the Youth mentors alongside the help from your class teacher, these materials are put in place to prevent negative behaviour. Youth mentors have the opportunity to run and support programs designed for students who need more support. Having a strong role model as a Youth mentor is essential for building positive relationships with your students, and having an open, warm personality is crucial for building relationships as well.

The alternative provision- Youth Mentor - Haringey

PRUs are a type of school that caters for children who aren't able to attend a mainstream school. Pupils are often referred there if they need greater care and support than their school can provide.

Children who attend a PRU might be:

  • Permanently excluded from their mainstream school for behaviour reasons, or at risk of permanent exclusion.
  • Experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties, including anger problems, mental health issues, and school phobia/refusal
  • Experiencing severe bullying.
  • Diagnosed with special educational needs (SEN), or in the process of diagnosis.
  • Suffering from a short- or long-term illness that makes mainstream school unsuitable.
