My client is an OfSTED "Good" SEN school in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham for children and young people diagnosed with autism.
We are looking to appoint an SEN teacher for a full-time position starting as soon as possible to join their expanding school in Hammersmith and Fulham. There is a comprehensive induction plan in place for new SEN Teacher starters and whilst the job is set to start on a long-term timesheet basis the Head has been clear that they would like to make this a permanent appointment subject to suitable performance.
The school are interested in teachers from mainstream and SEN school backgrounds with an interest in Autism who are passionate about supporting autistic pupils to access education both within school and in the local community. We are looking for individuals who are flexible, empathetic, creative, resilient and eager learn as an SEN teacher.
The SEN teacher job
The successful SEN teacher applicant will fulfil the full the professional responsibilities of a class teacher including all planning and assessment. The successful SEN teacher applicant will plan and teach well-structured, engaging, enticing, highly differentiated learning activities. You will create resources and an environment that caters to the needs and special interests and motivations of individual students.
The successful SEN Teacher will be teaching a mixed KS3 class of 8 pupils all of whom have a diagnosis of autism. The pupils follow a semi formal curriculum and you will be ably supported by a team of 3 TAs all of whom are experienced and know the pupils, their routines and needs.

The school incorporates a range of strategies in the delivery of its curriculum including TEACCH, Total communication and sensory integration approaches, Zones of Regulation, SoSAFE and other key interventions, as appropriate to the needs of the children in the class. Familiarity with these would be advantageous though not essential as SEN teacher training is available.
The SEN Teacher Applicant
The ideal SEN Teacher applicant would have the following traits:
- Qualified teacher status or comparable overseas qualification
- Successful teaching experience (preferably SEN)
- Knowledge of the National Curriculum
- Knowledge of effective teaching and learning strategies for autistic children
- A good understanding of how autistic children learn
- Ability to adapt teaching to meet pupil's needs
- Ability to build effective, safe and trusting relationships with pupils
- Knowledge of guidance and requirements around safeguarding children
- Knowledge of effective strategies to support children emotional regulation
- Good ICT skills, particularly using ICT to support learning
- Some knowledge of autism
