Job Title: Sustainability Manager
Salary: 65,000 + Package
Location:Head Office, London
Purpose of the Position:
The Sustainability Manager will assist the Head of Sustainability in supporting the project teams to manage and achieve sustainability objectives throughout the project lifecycle. The role involves working with both internal and external teams to ensure the project meets its environmental commitments and regulatory requirements.
Main Responsibilities:
Project Support and Environmental Management

Provide guidance on meeting and exceeding environmental goals, ensuring compliance with relevant contractual commitments, laws, and regulations across the design, procurement, and construction phases.

Implement an ISO 14001-certified environmental management system and related software for environmental reporting.
Preparation and Design Phase

Develop and agree on the Environmental Sustainability Management Plan.

Identify and implement project-specific environmental requirements such as BREEAM, WELL, LEED, and NABERS standards.

Collaborate with the project team to devise strategies for carbon reduction, waste minimisation, noise control, and biodiversity protection.

Set up environmental reporting tools (e.g., SmartWaste) and provide subcontractor training on sustainability requirements.

Establish project-specific KPI targets and track performance using tools like PowerBI.
Procurement and Contract Management

Insert environmental sustainability clauses into subcontractor contracts.

Work with the procurement team to evaluate sustainability proposals from suppliers and subcontractors.

Ensure the sustainability credentials of potential subcontractors are assessed during the tender process.
Construction and Operations Phase

Lead environmental kick-off meetings with the project team.

Assist with sustainability-related tasks and guide the team in implementing environmental strategies.

Participate in certification meetings (BREEAM, WELL, LEED, NABERS) with external assessors.

Manage subcontractors' sustainability performance, ensuring they meet environmental requirements and follow established plans.

Conduct site inspections and audits, ensuring compliance and corrective actions are taken.

Provide ongoing environmental training and coaching for both internal staff and subcontractors.

Monitor, track, and report on environmental KPIs, non-conformances, and incidents.
Sustainability Innovation and Stakeholder Engagement

Identify and drive innovative sustainability solutions within the project.

Build relationships with local authorities and regulatory bodies such as the Environment Agency.

Contribute to industry events and networks to stay updated on sustainability trends and raise the organisation's profile.
Essential Knowledge and Experience:

Prior experience in the UK construction industry.

Understanding of UK environmental legislation and sustainability requirements.

Familiarity with ISO 14001 environmental management system.

Proven experience with BREEAM-certified projects; experience with WELL certification is a plus.

Strong communication and presentation skills.

Proficient in MS Office and environmental reporting software.
Qualifications:
Membership with relevant professional bodies (e.g., IEMA) is desirable.
BREEAM Advisory Professional certification.
Postgraduate qualifications in a related field are a plus.
