Astute's Power team is partnering with a leading organisation who run a large sugar refinery and power plant in the London area.

We are looking for a Utilities Manager to oversaw day to day operations and engineering activities on the Utilities equipment on site which includes steam systems, power generation plant, water treatment facility, cooling towers etc.


As Utilities Manager you'll also be focusing on energy consumption, continuous improvement and managing plant availability. The role is paying a salary up to 70,000 plus car allowance & bonus.

Responsibilities and duties
Reporting to the Factory Manager, you will:

  • Manage the daily operations of the steam raising & power generation plant.
  • Oversee site compliance with Safety, Hygiene, Environment & Quality matters as set out by company wide policies to meet legislative & regulatory compliance.
  • Identify areas to improve plant performance & reliability to ensure efficient & cost effective plant operations.
  • Provide leadership & mentorship to graduates, process engineers, utilities engineers etc.
  • Work alongside the Area Maintenance Leader and Engineering Manager to improve plant reliability & availability across the wider refinery plant.
  • Manage Capital Investment projects.
  • Develop engineering strategy specifically improving plant performance, energy consumption, water consumption and safety.
  • Carry out monthly reporting for key metrics for the plant.
  • Work alongside Environmental Team to provide data & reports for emissions reporting and energy efficiency schemes.



Professional qualifications
We are looking for someone with the following:

  • Ideally a degree in Mechanical Engineering working towards or having already achieved chartership.
  • BOAS certified would be advantageous
  • IOSH or NEBOSH or similar in Health & Safety would be advantageous



Personal skills
The Utilities Manager role would suit someone who:

  • At least five years operations experience on a steam raising plant, in a similar heavy industrial setting such as power generation, CHP, refineries etc.
  • Able to prioritise and coordinate work activities based on operational needs.
  • Ability to gain technical knowledge to support safe and efficient work practices.
  • Proven experience delivering an engineering / operations strategy, with budgetary and project experience.
