Allen Lane are delighted to be assisting Luton Borough Council in their search for a Chief Accountant (Deputy S.151) to join their finance team on a permanent basis.

About the Role

The Chief Accountant will play a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining the Council’s accounting policies, ensuring compliance with professional standards, and offering strategic advice on financial health. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in public sector finance!

The Role

Reporting into the Service Director (S.151), you will be responsible for, but not limited to:?

  • Develop, implement, and ensure the consistent application of the Council’s accounting policies, in line with best practice and relevant codes of practice.

  • Provide strategic corporate advice on the development and application of the Council’s financial policies and practices.

  • Lead, manage, and motivate the Accountancy Division of Finance, ensuring alignment with Council objectives and statutory obligations.

  • Collaborate with Finance Managers across various directorates to address accounting matters and ensure cohesive financial management throughout the Council.

  • Contribute to the overall management of the Finance Division, supporting its aims, objectives, and performance targets.

  • Act as Deputy Section 151 Officer, assisting in the development and implementation of the Council’s financial strategies.

The Candidate

We are looking for ambitious qualified (CIPFA / ACA / ACCA / CIMA or equivalent) candidates with strong technical accounting experience, who have worked within local government.

You will have experience of working under pressure, be able to demonstrate excellent communications skills and have a proven track record of?effective decision making with excellent attention to detail.

This role offers a hybrid working model (1-2 days per week office based).
