Connect2Luton are excited to recruit a Central Heating Engineer on behalf of Luton Borough Council.

Main purpose of position:

To complete a comprehensive range of central heating works including undertaking related site surveys and providing lists of materials to complete repairs and refurbishment projects within contract conditions, timescales and costs.

You will be responsible to:


Carry out a comprehensive range of plumbing/central heating repair and associated multi-trade, to include elements of electrical diagnostic work, refurbishment project work, across various sectors including domestic property, high rise schools, shops, industrial units etc.

Self diagnose appropriate repair or maintenance activity comply with risk assessments and method statements and plan workloads to ensure that contract completion conditions, dates and costs are met. When necessary inform Team Supervisor, if repair specified does not meet, cost effectiveness or value for money criteria.

Ensure that all work is completed by appointment, and via the use of job ticket or hand held technology. Diagnose and use materials to effect the repair in hand. Correctly book the appropriate schedule of rate references, variations completion dates and any follow up work required.

Carry appropriate materials as impress van stock, ensure outgoing stock is recorded, and logged on hand held technology. Ensure stocks are replenished in line with approved procedure. Make recommendations on stock position, type, frequency of use and performance, to ensure accurate update of back office systems. Re-stock in timely fashion to ensure continued service delivery.

Take material measurements from drawings and/or from site measurements; determine quantities and materials lists to meet the specifications and to ensure materials are ordered correctly.

Ensure that work is carried out in accordance with Health & Safety legislation, and in particular the Gas User Regulations 1998 ensure range of legal documents e.g. Landlord certificates (CP12), are accurately completed and accounted for. Ensure that the work site is kept clean, tidy and secure. Check and test other Health and Safety equipment, including residents smoke alarms.

Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrable experience of working with Schedule of Rates, and to specifications including working from drawings
  • Able to plan and prioritise workloads to meet specified outputs and deadlines
  • Able to work without supervision and to use own initiative within established procedures and good working practice
  • Able to assess and address problems arising on-site e.g. diagnosis of faults and problems, type of materials required, equipment required to carry out the work and safe working assessments
  • Advanced central heating apprenticeship to NVQ Level 3 or Basic plumbing/central heating apprenticeship NVQ Level 2/City & Guilds qualification + A.C.S. Accreditation
  • Able to carry and climb ladders to undertake inspections and gain access to loft spaces and roofs
  • Able to converse with ease with members of the public and provide effective help or advice in accurate and fluent spoken English
