Working hours are typically: Monday - Thursday 8 am to 4:30 pm, Friday: 8 am - 3:30 pm.

The Job Role Details:

Reporting directly to the Area Vineyard Manager, as the Vineyard Supervisor you will be responsible for the day to day running of the vineyard, its staff, contractors and visitors.

This role includes vineyard, people and budget management, as well as accurate record keeping and a lead role in the annual harvest.

Most of your time will be spent working in the outdoors and requires you to be flexible with your working hours during certain times of the year.

This is a demanding position that requires a highly motivated individual with significant experience in a same or similar role.

Key Responsibilities:

Ensure that all works are planned effectively and completed within given timescales:

  • Management of young vines, including vineyard establishment, as necessary.
  • Fertiliser applications (soil and canopy).
  • Spray applications.
  • Canopy management, including leaf removal (mechanical and manual), leaf trimming and fruit thinning (yield manipulation and colour thinning).
  • Trellis maintenance.
  • Ground management, including weed spraying, mowing and soil cultivation.
  • Machinery maintenance.
  • Site maintenance.

Supervision and motivation of vineyard staff, including:

  • Maintain a professional, but approachable attitude at all times and encourage a positive working environment.
  • Keep everyone informed of relevant information, such as company news, training days, work schedules etc.
  • Manage holiday and TOIL requests.
  • Manage all performance related processes when required. This includes annual performance appraisals, disciplinary, capabilities and where necessary, grievances.
  • On-site health and safety and associated record keeping, including staff inductions, health and safety training, risk assessments and issue of PPE.
  • Assess any training requirements and propose training plan to Viticulturist.
  • Carry out any prescribed training, as required.
  • Organise work schedules and rostering of staff during peak periods.

Maintain manual and electronic records (using appropriate software) including:

  • Weekly job monitoring sheets, monthly planning charts and pesticide records.
  • Disease monitoring and recording.
  • Yield forecast related data.
  • Manage a small budget for vineyard site including purchases up to an authorised limit.

Other duties include:

  • Close communication with Head & Associate Viticulturists, Area Vineyard Manager and Kent Vineyard Manager (East).
  • Strong involvement in harvest preparations (propose, delegate & supervise job allocations, contact contractors etc.)
  • Assist and collaborate with other vineyard teams as necessary, in particular Kent East Vineyard Team.
  • Always act as a positive ambassador including maintaining good relationships with our neighbours
  • It is good practice to periodically review job descriptions. This could lead to amendments of job descriptions, which should only happen in consultation with the employee and their line manager.

You will have / be

  • Recent experience working in a similar vineyard / winery / horticultural / viticulture role.
  • A proven track record in managing and motivating a team of staff.
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and planning skills.
  • Able to manage conflicting priorities and work independently to achieve the best outcome.
  • A drive to ensure a healthy, secure and safe working environment at all times is paramount.
