An exciting position has arisen for a Senior Payroll Officer to join a Charity that strives to support people with learning disabilities. The postholder will provide hands-on technical support in all aspects of payroll checking.
Key responsibilities:
- Demonstrate advanced payroll technician knowledge and apply it in verifying and approving calculations performed by Payroll Officers and Administrators, ensuring compliance with the charity’s standards and procedures.
- Ensure timely collation of data and update spreadsheets with payroll input progress.
- Run the final payroll in collaboration with the payroll team and Payroll Managers.
- Review exception and comparison reports acting on any issues found.
- Monitor the payroll inbox with the team to highlight trends.
- Run month-end reports and understand the output for reconciliation.
- Process correspondence from internal and external sources within relevant time periods.
- Reconcile and raise payment requests for third-party payments (e.g., HMRC, Unions, attachment of earnings) monthly.
- Attend meetings to provide advice, support, and feedback to the team.
- Maintain an organised working environment by ensuring all documents are signed and electronically filed promptly.
- Stay updated with statutory legislation to ensure compliance with HMRC and awareness of auto-enrolment guidance.
- Resolve technical payroll queries from employees, HR, and external agencies (e.g., HMRC, DWP) courteously and professionally.
- Work as part of a team to produce end-of-month and yearly statutory returns where requested.
Successful candidate profile:
- Experience of credit control collecting from Local Authorities or other entities
- In-depth knowledge of payroll issues, including tax, national insurance, statutory legislation, and payments
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Suite including Intermediate Excel skills
- Experience with payroll systems (currently using Iris/Earnie, but not essential)
- Keen eye for detail and strong verbal communication skills
Length: 12-month contract, with possibility to move permanent
Salary: £35,000 per annum
Hours: 35 per week
Working pattern: Office-based working with some hybrid flexibility
