Duty Compliance Accountant Role Overview:

The Duty Compliance Accountant is a business-critical position is that is responsible for ensuring that all UK customs and excise liabilities are accounted for accurately in the general ledger, and that movements of excise goods are operated in compliance with HMRC guidance.

This is a is unique Finance role as it works between both the operational and accounting teams to manage and oversee two month ends. You will ensure that both HMRC and the wider finance teams are provided with fully supported numbers to satisfy the monthly excise and import duty payments at the end of each duty period.

This is an ideal opportunity for somebody nearing the completion of their accounting qualifications, seeking operational exposure.  You will need to be familiar with various excise duty notices and be open to developing your knowledge in this area.

Duty Compliance Accountant Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for the review, consolidation, and preparation of monthly excise duty liability.
  • Ensuring the accurate accounting of customs and excise duty liabilities in the general ledger in accordance with the business timetable.
  • Forecasting of excise duty gains and losses at UK terminals – reporting to the Group Financial Controller on variances to budget.
  • Ensuring that the core UK terminal activity operates within HMRC guidelines and that all stock terminals have appropriate licenses to cover operational activity.
  • Managing the excise duty deferment limits with UK terminals to ensuring no interruption to supply.
  • Ensuring any operational changes to the business are understood and communicated from a tax perspective and that appropriate actions are taken to ensure accurate reporting and compliance.
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with all internal and external excise duty stakeholders.
  • Engaging with HMRC and speaking with authority on customs and excise matters with local agents.

Duty Compliance Accountant Required Experience:

  • Applicants will ideally have an accounting and finance degree and be working towards CIMA/ACCA/ACA qualifications, although this is not essential and QBE candidates will also be considered.
  • Previous experience in a similar position with exposure to duty and excise accounting.
  • Confident verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with various stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
  • Strong analytical skills with a high degree of attention to detail.
  • A willingness to learn the required legislation and legal notices relating to customs and excise.
  • Advanced Excel and PowerBI skills
  • The ability to work as part of a small team to contribute to team results and deadlines.
  • The ability to commit to a minimum 12-month contract.
