Design Manager

Lead the engineering design delivery on Clean and Waste water projects across our Design and Build Contracts

Integrate multiple engineering disciplines including process, mechanical, civil / structural, electrical, instrumentation, control and survey from a mix of internal and external designers

Monitor leading industry practices, recommend new design approaches, and identify upcoming trends and new businesses opportunities

Undertake the role of Principal Designer Representative on project(s) where required, ensuring design information is being suitable managed and communicated to the various roles and compliant with the requirements of CDM 2015 Regulations

Develop high-quality concepts, working with team on iterations and design, actively seek feedback from Creative and Business stakeholders

Manage the design process for projects from conception at notional solution stage, through ECI and pre-construction, support on construction phase through to post-construction and project handover/completion where applicable

Managing all design phases of projects, including project set-up, programming, design, and construction administration

Collaborate with both internal design team, client design team and external consultants to execute creative projects

Lead on the interpretation and communication of policy, legislation, standards and codes of practices within civil engineering, drainage, landscaping and construction. This may include departures from standards, CDM, innovation of new products and adoption of measures to target Climate Change

Provide expert advice to internal and external project teams and help shape standards for workmanship and products used in infrastructure, to deliver effective and efficient projects

Review and liaise with Temporary Works Coordinators and Designers to ensure appropriate consideration of constructability and required permanent works

Evaluate existing provision and monitor service developments to recommend large scale service improvements for decision by senior management e.g. reviewing service delivery models

Review management information on the performance of the team and the wider Design and Construction Service objectives and implement improvements

Lead at a high level on the design and delivery of Civil programmes to achieve milestones and resolve service issues. This includes initiating and scoping improvement projects that are not solely engineering related but on a wider countywide service improvement and leading on the design of objectives

Responding to and resolving issues with external parties such as the Client, third party organisations, sub-contractors, supply chain and wider strategic stakeholders

Lead, develop and promote a culture of continual professional development of all staff at each level.Supervise, coach, and provide leadership and guidance to existing design staff along with leading on building a design team in the future

Ensure an understanding of, and an influence on the contracts that Design Consultants are working under including their fees, schedule of services, programme, and liabilities and warranties

Represent the Company at external forums, conferences and meetings to build professional networks and influence wider policy agendas

Experience

Significant experience at senior management level; managing design programme and deliverables for large and/or complex civil engineering operations and services

Significant experience of working across services within multi-disciplinary engineering teams; managing projects and teams outside of direct line management

Initial strategy, policy and procedural development and implementation across clean and waste water design and delivery

Innovative and creative management of services within a changing and challenging financial environment to provide Water Projects

Management and development of teams to ensure high quality service delivery within an uncertain environment

Essential knowledge, skills & abilities

Degree qualified engineer preferably in Civil Engineering

Ability to build relationships and influence, develop and motivate at senior levels, internally and externally

Understanding and knowledge of relevant Civil Engineering specifications that apply to the water industry

Developed understanding of company service strategy and objectives with translation and implementation at local level with the design service

Ability to apply managerial judgement to ensure service area objectives are achieved

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to look ahead and understand implications of future initiatives within the area of responsibility

Strong project and change management skills

Further develop the core capabilities of the engineering team by developing training and career plans for members of the team, identifying and filling gaps in expertise and talent
