Senior Geotechnical Engineer

  • 35 Hours per week, Work X 3 days / 2 days remote
  • 12-month contract

To be responsible for the engineering development of proposals from clarification of remit to project completion for the Work Delivery Internal Design Team (IDT).

Reporting to the IDT Programme Manager

The candidate has good and demonstrable knowledge of Geotechnical Engineering however the role will also include working on civils schemes

Typical schemes will include:

  • Embankment and cutting stabilisation.
  • Design of Retaining structures
  • Pile Design
  • Scour Protection and Sea Defence
  • Culvert lining and replacement
  • Temporary works (temporary slope stability, Crane pads)
  • Lineside structures

Key Accountabilities

  1. Manage the production of the development remits for proposals so that the engineering

requirements, scope, possibilities and operational performance targets are accurately described and

maintain a robust challenge to sponsoring engineers and managers, to monitor and value manage

the business and technical remit.

  1. Manage all engineering and development activities so that they result in schemes that are affordable,

and that meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time,

cost and quality.

  1. Manage the development of suitable engineering options for proposals so that full consideration is

given to safety, reliability, operational capacity modelling, maintainability, ease of construction and

environmental / whole life issues. Review compliance with standards and maintain designer's

competency.

  1. Maintain strict change control on scope development; evaluate cost, time and performance impacts in conjunction with development management.
  2. Participate in the selection of a single option for further development and manage the development of the selected single option, preparing and monitoring production of reports and papers.
  3. Prepare the full engineering data package required for commencement of the detailed design and participate in answering on-going clarifications/queries as needed. Where applicable, manage independent checking of safety critical design documentation.
  4. Support the Construction Design Management (CDM) Planning Supervisor during GRIP stages 2 to 4 in all associated duties and carry out or monitor cross-discipline engineering checks of all relevant aspects of the proposal.
  5. Resource adequately the feasibility stages of project development, in both the quality and quantity of staff, and in the use of the most appropriate support equipment.
  6. Manage the engineering interfaces of allocated proposals with concurrent work in other disciplines, or within other programmes.
  7. Act as or liaise with, the appropriate Project Engineer so that method statements for site works and surveys are produced and accepted to the required standards.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • An engineering degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification.
  • 5 years' relevant post-graduate experience of producing Civil / Geotechnical designs
  • A working knowledge of rail engineering
  • A demonstrable aptitude for option development.
  • Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of CDM and Risk assessment
  • Full UK Driving Licence and be able to attend sites in the NW&C region,
  • An excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Excellent Report writing skills.
  • Ability to produce and maintain Programmes and Estimates
  • Client liaison skills
  • Be able to liaise with our internal Contractor
  • Be able to manage, mentor and develop Assistant Engineers and Draughtsmen
  • Good attitude
  • Live locally to South Manchester
  • Act as CRE on Schemes

Desirable

  • CEng or IEng in a relevant engineering professional institution.
