Manufacturing Technician - University of Manchester

  • £31,637.00 to £36,130.00 - depending on experience.
  • (£17.38 per hour to £19.85 per hour).
  • 35 hours per week.
  • 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday.
  • (Flexibility Essential).
  • 12 weeks temporary to permanent position.

We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Manufacturing Technician to join The University of Manchester.

Initially on a 12 weeks temporary to permanent contract, this position will become permanent after a 3 months probationary period.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Experienced CNC machinist - Lathe, Miller and Machining Centres
  • Experienced in operating conventional turning and milling machines.
  • Experienced in producing precision components to tight tolerances.
  • Apprentice Trained.
  • Mechanical Engineering ONC or BTEC Higher National Certificate or Diploma or equivalent
  • Specialised knowledge in the appropriate technical area or areas and in the use of machines, tools, and equipment necessary to carry out the technical duties of the post.
  • Ability to work independently whilst contributing to a larger team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to organise own work to meet deadlines.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of CAD and CAM, e.g. modifying CAD drawings, importing CAD files into CAM software, in-depth CAM software knowledge to create tool paths for both 2-axis turning centres and 3-axis machining centres
  • EDM Wire machining
  • IOSHH Health & Safety or similar qualification

Overall Purpose of the Job:

The technician will be required to produce a wide range of precision components and assemblies, using an extensive range of machine tools and equipment, including both conventional and CNC machines, within one of the university’s mechanical workshops.

This role is to support teaching and research activities in the Faculty of Science and Engineering by manufacturing components, from engineering drawings, and by using CAM software generated from SolidWorks 3D models. The work is interesting and varied with generally one-off components or small batches.
