The client is an emerging electrification engineering and civil construction contractor who works closely with a wide range of prestigious engineering and construction clients across a number of disciplines within the UK civil infrastructure industry. These disciplines include; Design, Engineering, Construction & Maintenance.

Job Description:

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Senior Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) Designer to join our team, focusing on the design and development of both heavy and light rail systems in the UK.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality OLE designs across various projects, ensuring compliance with rail industry standards, safety requirements, and project goals.

Key Responsibilities:

OLE Design and Development:

  • Lead the development of detailed OLE designs for both heavy and light rail infrastructure, including electrification systems, mast placements, and catenary systems.
  • Perform design calculations for the structural and mechanical aspects of overhead line systems, ensuring optimal performance and durability.
  • Ensure all designs meet industry standards (e.g., Network Rail and UK Light Rail standards), safety regulations, and client specifications.

Project Management:

  • Take a senior role in managing design teams, providing technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, structural, and systems engineers, to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively to ensure successful delivery of OLE designs.

Client and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with clients, including Network Rail, Transport for London, and other key stakeholders, to ensure design solutions align with project needs.
  • Provide expert consultation and advice to clients on OLE systems, addressing technical queries and ensuring client satisfaction.

Technical Documentation:

  • Prepare, review, and approve detailed design reports, drawings, and technical documentation using industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley Rail Track).
  • Ensure all documentation complies with relevant industry guidelines, including those from Network Rail, Transport for London, and other authorities.

Compliance & Quality Assurance:

  • Conduct quality assurance checks on all design outputs to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Undertake site inspections as required, verifying that OLE installations conform to the approved designs.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (or related field).
  • Professional membership or chartered status (e.g., with IET, ICE, or relevant institutions) is preferred.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in OLE design for both heavy rail (Network Rail infrastructure) and light rail systems.
  • Extensive experience in the full lifecycle of OLE projects, from concept design through to detailed design, construction support, and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with Network Rail, UK tram, and light rail design standards and specifications.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in industry-standard OLE design software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation).
  • Strong knowledge of overhead line equipment principles, electrical systems, and mechanical loading in rail environments.
  • Experience with BIM and digital design tools is desirable.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to guide and develop junior engineers.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a focus on innovation and efficiency.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of UK rail electrification programs and current industry trends, including decarbonization and sustainability initiatives.
