About the Role

Equitas is recruiting an experienced and dependable School Caretaker on behalf of a well-regarded primary school. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the school premises are safe, clean, and well-maintained for students, staff, and visitors.

This position requires someone who can take ownership of opening and securing the school premises at the start and end of each day, as well as performing a variety of maintenance and caretaking tasks throughout their shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Opening and Closing Duties:

    • Unlock the school in the morning, ensuring all doors, gates, and facilities are accessible and safe for use.
    • Secure the premises in the evening, ensuring all doors, windows, and gates are locked, and alarms are set.
  • Health and Safety Compliance:

    • Conduct regular site checks, including fire safety checks, emergency lighting inspections, and hazard identification.
    • Monitor and report any issues related to health and safety on the school premises.
  • General Maintenance:

    • Carry out basic repairs and maintenance tasks, such as fixing broken fixtures, minor plumbing, and replacing lightbulbs.
    • Keep external areas tidy, including clearing leaves, snow, or debris as required.
    • Oversee contractors on-site for larger repair or maintenance projects.
  • Cleaning and Hygiene:

    • Ensure communal areas such as corridors, entrances, and staff rooms are clean and tidy.
    • Handle urgent cleaning tasks that arise during the day, such as spills or accidents.
  • Security Monitoring:

    • Maintain vigilance over the school premises during your shifts and report any suspicious activity.
    • Check that all security systems, such as alarms and CCTV, are functioning correctly.
  • Support for School Events:

    • Set up and pack away equipment or furniture for school activities, assemblies, or events.
    • Ensure the premises are ready for any out-of-hours activities or external hires.
  • Stock and Equipment Management:

    • Monitor and replenish cleaning and maintenance supplies, ensuring stock levels are maintained.
    • Organise and maintain tools, cleaning equipment, and materials.

Person Specification

We are looking for someone with the following attributes:

  • Previous experience in a similar caretaking or facilities role (school-based experience preferred but not essential).
  • Basic DIY and maintenance skills.
  • Awareness of health and safety practices, with the ability to identify and address risks.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work independently.
  • A professional, friendly demeanor and excellent communication skills.
