BASED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

** Initially a 12 months fixed term contract **

** Highly likely will become long term permanent **

  • 35 hours per week Monday to Friday
  • Flexibility essential between 9:00am and 6:00pm

JOB OVERVIEW:

  • Equipment maintenance.
  • Technical troubleshooting.
  • Providing essential support to both students and staff.
  • Ensuring the smooth operation of teaching laboratories.
  • Prepare and maintain teaching spaces, support practical classes with a team.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Background:

  • Ideally - A qualification in a science or engineering-related subject (e.g., degree, HND, HNC, Level 4 NVQ) or relevant technical work experience.

Laboratory Skills:

  • Ability to carry out basic laboratory tasks such as setting up equipment and apparatus.
  • Interest in laboratory teaching equipment (e.g., electronic equipment and components).
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment.

Manual Handling:

  • Experience with manual handling tasks and familiarity with practical, hands-on activities.

Health and Safety Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements such as risk assessments, COSHH, PAT testing, manual handling, etc.

Technical and IT Skills:

  • Basic IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Basic technical problem-solving skills, such as conducting inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPOSNIBILITES

Prepare and Maintain Teaching Laboratories:

  • Set up teaching spaces, equipment, and materials for practical classes and other events.

Technical Troubleshooting:

  • Act as the first point of contact for staff and students to report technical issues, and escalate when necessary.

Health and Safety Compliance:

  • Ensure adherence to safety regulations (e.g., handling chemicals, hazardous waste management, and conducting safety checks on equipment).

Stock Management:

  • Assist with stock control, including conducting stock-takes, ordering, and maintaining necessary supplies.

Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Perform basic inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance on lab equipment, ensuring minimal disruption to teaching.

Assist with Training:

  • Help induct and train staff, students, and visitors on how to work safely in the lab environment.

Housekeeping and Waste Disposal:

  • Carry out general lab maintenance tasks, including waste disposal, and ensure labs are clean and operational.

Engineering and Contractor Coordination:

  • Arrange external visits for equipment repair and servicing.

Support Other Areas:

  • Be flexible and assist other departments or areas when necessary, learning new techniques as required.
