Our client, a prominent consultancy in the rail sector, is currently seeking a Senior Temporary Works Design Engineer to join their dynamic team in Manchester on a permanent basis. This role primarily involves contributing to the successful delivery of diverse civil, structural, and geotechnical temporary works designs within the business.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with all aspects of temporary works design and checking for tender and construction phases of UK and Ireland projects.
  • Preparing safe, buildable, and efficient temporary works designs in accordance with relevant design codes.
  • Producing temporary works calculations and associated drawings (using CAD) and design risk assessments to challenging deadlines.
  • Ensuring the design is managed in accordance with relevant quality procedures.
  • Establishing a design brief through consultation with relevant parties, considering all construction loads.
  • Advising permanent works designers of any temporary conditions or loads to be considered in permanent works design.
  • Ensuring the design is independently checked for concept, structural adequacy, and compliance with the brief.
  • Checking, reviewing, approving, and certifying temporary works designs by others/sub-contractors.
  • Ensuring full compliance with CDM requirements.
  • Providing prompt advice and reacting to construction teams' needs during site activities.
  • Supporting estimating teams to develop costs, programmes, and construction sequencing.
  • Providing necessary information to enable the procurement of materials and subcontractors.
  • Collaborating with other professionals in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Offering technical guidance to less experienced engineers, including site team members.
  • Attending site visits as required to inspect temporary works or resolve buildability issues.
  • Introducing improvements and innovations where appropriate.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement by attending team meetings and contributing to team development topics.


Job Requirements:

  • Experience in temporary works design and checking across various construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of civil and structural engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in producing calculations and drawings using CAD software.
  • Knowledge of quality procedures related to temporary works design.
  • Ability to establish and manage design briefs in consultation with relevant parties.
  • Competence in independently checking designs for structural adequacy and compliance.
  • Familiarity with CDM requirements and their implementation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to provide prompt advice during construction activities.
  • Effective collaboration skills to work within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Capability to guide and mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and address buildability issues.
