An SEN teacher should possess a unique set of personality traits to effectively support students with special educational needs such as:
- Patience: You must be patient and understanding, as students often need extra time and support to grasp concepts and skills.
- Empathy: The ability to understand and relate to student's emotional and learning challenges is critical in building trust and providing meaningful support.
- Adaptability: You need to be flexible, able to tailor lessons and approaches to meet the varying needs of their students.
- Resilience: Working with SEN students can be challenging, so resilience is important to stay positive and maintain motivation through setbacks.
- Creativity: Finding innovative ways to engage students and make learning accessible is a key skill, often requiring out-of-the-box thinking.
- Strong Communication Skills: You must effectively communicate with students, colleagues, and parents, often simplifying complex information to ensure understanding.
Compassion: A deep care for the well-being and success of each student is at the heart of the role, motivating teachers to go above and beyond for their students.
Key Requirements:
- QTS or QTLS
- Experience working with children and young people with a range of special educational needs
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with students, parents, and colleagues
- Patience, empathy, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment
