Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCO) in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)

The post holder will be expected to match the characteristics appropriate to their seniority, as described in the Teachers' Standards Framework. Under the reasonable direction of the Headteacher, he/she will be required to exercise his/her professional skills and judgement to carry out, in a collaborative manner, the duties of a teacher, as set out in the current School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document. This post is to start just after February half-term.The Role:

  • Support and contribute to the development of special educational needs and provision in the school;
  • Provision to support individual pupils with SEN or a disability;
  • Provide professional guidance to colleagues, working closely with staff, parents and other agencies in school;
  • The SENCO will be expected to fulfil the responsibilities of a teacher, as set out in the STPCD.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To assist in the coordination of SEND provision in a Learning Centre, ensuring effective management of resources.
  • Identifying and assessing pupils' needs through the analysis of available data, initial and ongoing observation and assessment.
  • Monitoring and tracking pupil progress to inform the setting of appropriately challenging and achievable individual targets.
  • Ensure records are maintained and kept up to date.
  • Manage and lead on all aspects of the Statutory Assessment process for your identified cohort.
  • Lead on EHCP annual reviews for your cohort.
  • Planning, developing, modelling and enhancing appropriate provision, learning programmes and/ or lessons to take account of pupils' needs and aspirations and the requirements of the curriculum.
  • Teaching clearly structured lessons or sequences of lessons, which engage and motivate children and young people using a variety of strategies appropriate to their needs.
  • Promoting and maintaining an ethos of positive behaviour to ensure effective learning.
  • Establishing and maintaining high expectations of pupils, self, and the work of the PRU.
  • Participating and assisting in whole-school self-review, evaluation and development planning.
  • Delivering effective programmes of intervention.
  • Providing clear and accurate assessments of pupils' attainment, strengths and needs to inform individual education plans for placement and transitions.
  • Sharing innovation and best practice in teaching and learning methods for school/ settings, identifying the appropriate resource materials and techniques to support delivery.
  • Providing advice on curriculum delivery for whole school/settings approaches or specific target groups.
  • Working with parents, carers, and all relevant agencies and/ or partners to ensure the best possible outcomes for children and young people with additional needs.
