Burton-on-Trent

Salary: £50,000 - £70,000
25 Days Holiday + Bank Holidays

The Company: A leading provider of heavy equipment solutions for the rail, construction, and mining industries is looking to hire a Software and Control Engineer. This company has a well-established market presence and specializes in designing and manufacturing heavy equipment, including mining machinery, locomotives, and rail-laying equipment.

With a skilled team of engineers, this business provides bespoke, custom-built solutions, ensuring a varied and exciting workload for its engineering team. Their flexible approach to design and manufacture allows them to deliver projects that their competitors may not be able to undertake.

Currently employing around 50 staff, the company has a dedicated team of 8 engineers working across electrical and mechanical design. With ambitious plans for growth and international client acquisition, they are seeking an additional Software and Control Engineer to help drive the business forward and deliver additional projects.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Designing and programming PLC & control systems for hybrid locomotives, battery-electric drives, and heavy machinery.
  • Working with Parker IQAN or Infineon Aurix controllers (training can be provided on one if needed).
  • Developing HMI and SCADA systems, designing user interfaces, and integrating control networks.
  • Conducting software testing, simulation, and validation before commissioning.
  • Installing and commissioning control systems, troubleshooting errors, and ensuring compliance with EN 61508, ISO 13849, and CANbus protocols (J1939-71, J1939-76).
  • Supporting international clients and resolving issues—potential travel required (2-3 trips per year).
  • Assisting in the development of training manuals and documentation for customers and internal teams.
  • Working with mechanical and electrical teams to refine product design and ensure smooth project execution.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Proven experience in Controls, Electrical, or Software Engineering within heavy machinery, automotive, or rail.
  • Strong background in PLC programming, control networks, and industrial automation.
  • Experience with Parker IQAN or Infineon Aurix (or similar control platforms).
  • Ability to take ownership of projects and work independently—no micromanagement here!
  • Curiosity, problem-solving mindset, and ability to adapt to a fast-moving, hands-on environment.
  • Ability to work with high-voltage systems, battery management, and hybrid drive integration.
  • Willingness to travel internationally for troubleshooting and commissioning.

The Benefits:

  • Salary range between £50,000 - £70,000 DOE
  • Profit share bonus Scheme
  • Life Assurance: 4x salary
  • Company pension scheme
  • Healthcare: Optional buy-in scheme
  • Flexible working hours
  • Sponsorship Available: Visa sponsorship and license arrangements can be sorted for the right candidate
