Senior Engineer, Transport Infrastructure Service

We are seeking a Senior Engineer to lead and manage the delivery of schemes within the Transportation Capital Investment Programme. This role requires a high level of technical expertise and the ability to provide high-quality, efficient, effective, and customer-focused service. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with the Council’s corporate objectives and related transport policies.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Lead and manage the delivery of schemes within the Transportation Capital Investment Programme.
  • Liaise with Ward Members and the Cabinet Member to provide professional and technical advice.
  • Collect and utilize technical data to prepare cost estimates, specifications, drawings, contract documents, bills of quantities, and schedules of work.
  • Provide consultancy advice and produce comprehensive technical reports.
  • Develop briefs, issue work for detailed design, and liaise with other service units, outside bodies/agencies, and partners.
  • Prepare complex new works and maintenance scheme designs using engineering design standards.
  • Act as ‘CDM’ principal designer and/or project manager where appropriate.
  • Provide effective project, safety, programme, and performance management.
  • Supervise site works and ensure required specifications and safety standards are met.
  • Supervise other technical staff, including planning and allocating work, checking work quality, and providing on-job training.
  • Coordinate activities and foster close relationships with other departments and outside bodies.
  • Benchmark team standards, monitor and review standard procedures and operational practices.
  • Carry out site inspections and surveys, and initiate or attend to remedial action in the event of transportation asset failure.
  • Deputize for the group lead manager and other roles within the service as required.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Substantial experience operating at a senior level as an Engineer within the Transportation Infrastructure Service.
  • Extensive experience of transportation, road traffic, and road safety policies, procedures, and legislation.
  • Proven track record in delivering projects/work programmes to quality, time, and budget.
  • Experience in leading a team of staff, including planning and allocation of work.
  • Practical knowledge of specialist IT software packages (e.g., Auto CAD, Mapinfo, GIS).
  • Level 7 qualification (e.g., Post Graduate Certificates and Diplomas) or equivalent knowledge gained through work experience.
  • Effective communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
