We are seeking a Senior Engineer for our Transport Infrastructure Service, providing technical leadership on local highways projects. This role is crucial for managing road safety improvement schemes and a growing team of highways engineers and consultants. The successful candidate will ensure the delivery of high-quality infrastructure projects, adhering to Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders and Councillors.
Day-to-day of the role:- Act as Client or Principal Designer for team-delivered schemes.
- Develop business cases and feasibility studies to ensure project outcomes and benefits.
- Deliver highway designs using AutoCAD and related design packages.
- Prepare tender packages, including drawings, bills of quantities, specifications, and Pre-Construction Health & Safety Plans.
- Draft and consult on Traffic Regulation Orders in liaison with Legal.
- Prepare cost estimates for client budgeting and ensure designs comply with current standards.
- Support the senior leadership team in managing the Local Schemes Team, including performance management.
- Conduct site inspections and surveys, taking remedial action if needed.
- Maintain excellent stakeholder relationships, ensuring timely communications with Local Councillors.
- Manage and deliver projects from inception to completion, ensuring all designs comply with CDM 2015.
- Deputise for the group lead manager and other roles as required, including attending meetings during and out of hours.
- Provide technical leadership on team-delivered schemes and train and mentor junior engineers.
- Manage and coordinate personal workload to achieve project deliverables within agreed time, quality, and financial objectives.
- Substantial experience as a senior-level Engineer within the Public Sector.
- Good knowledge of transportation, road traffic, and road safety policies, procedures, and legislation.
- Proven ability to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
- Experience in leading a team, planning and allocating work, and supervising staff.
- Knowledge of value for money and best practice principles.
- Practical knowledge of specialist IT software (e.g., AutoCAD, Mapinfo, GIS).
- Extensive experience in Safety, Health, and Environmental compliance, particularly with CDM regulations.
- Ability to assess customer/stakeholder requirements and provide solutions.
- Capacity to manage multiple projects and lead delivery teams.
- Experience in supporting junior team members and helping them produce exceptional outputs.
- Ability to integrate into a team and consult with clients and stakeholders.
