We are seeking a Senior Engineer for our Transport Infrastructure Service, who will provide high-quality, efficient, and customer-focused service. This role involves leading and managing projects within the Transportation Capital Investment Programme and ensuring compliance with relevant local transport plans and policies.
Day-to-day of the role:- Lead and manage a range of projects from small enhancements to multi-million-pound improvements.
- Represent the Service in various working groups, forums, and partnerships.
- Utilise technical data to prepare cost estimates, specifications, drawings, contract documents, bills of quantities, and work schedules.
- Provide consultancy advice and produce technical reports for Council representatives and clients.
- Develop briefs, issue work for detailed design, and liaise with other service units, outside bodies/agencies, and partners.
- Prepare complex new works and maintenance scheme designs, acting as ‘CDM’ principal designer and/or project manager where appropriate.
- Provide effective project, safety, program, and performance management, including planning and allocation of work and training.
- Supervise site works to ensure specifications and safety standards are met.
- Supervise technical staff, plan and allocate work, check work quality, and provide on-job training.
- Coordinate activities and foster relationships with other departments and outside bodies.
- Benchmark team standards, monitor and review procedures, and revise documents and practices as necessary.
- Conduct site inspections and surveys, and take remedial action if needed.
- Deputise for the group lead manager and other roles as required, including attending meetings during and out of hours.
- Substantial experience as a senior-level Engineer within the Transportation Infrastructure Service.
- Extensive knowledge of transportation, road traffic, and road safety policies, procedures, and legislation.
- Experience in producing complex technical and Member reports and presenting them at Council Meetings and other forums.
- Proven ability to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
- Experience in leading a team, planning and allocating work, and supervising staff.
- Knowledge of value for money and best practice principles.
- Practical knowledge of specialist IT software (e.g., AutoCAD, Mapinfo, GIS).
- Experience in leading service Safety, Health, and Environmental compliance, particularly with CDM regulations.
- Ability to assess customer/stakeholder requirements and provide solutions.
- Qualifications: Equivalent qualification or experience in Highways, Structures, or Traffic Engineering.
- DBS Level: Basic
- Shift Working/Out of Hours: Occasional out-of-hours work may be required.
- General Requirements: Able to work flexibly and travel within the Borough.
