Senior R&D Scientist

We are working with a fine chemical company working in synthesis of natural fragrance and sensory products. These products go into a range of FMCG products, and it’s likely you’ll have some in your house right now as ingredients in shower gels, cleaning sprays, air fresheners etc!

The company is a leading business in their field and the role will be to carry out the synthetic chemical activities that lead to products being developed for their clients. They are seeking an experienced synthesis chemist with experience of reaction / organic chemistry who can grow and maintain the products the company manufactures.

What you’ll do:

  • You will research new processes, materials & techniques through literature searches and laboratory work that can be used in the production of new US/EU natural aroma chemicals (or the improvement of existing natural products), and to lead these projects effectively.
  • Scale up reactions to maximum laboratory scale, develop "Technology Transfer packs" and in conjunction with Quality Control (QC) department develop analytical methods for in process QC and final product testing.
  • To act as technical "champion" during development trials within the production plants, providing on-site support to production as required.
  • To prepare reports on R&D activities within the laboratory, including for internal intranet publication.
  • To maintain a working knowledge of the chemical processes used within Operations, and to aid Operations as required with these processes.
  • To follow good housekeeping practice and safe working procedures in the laboratory and office, ensure that all areas remain clean and tidy and free from spillage at all times. To maintain accurate and precise lab book data.
  • To follow the company’s Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental policies and promote adherence to it; especially in the keeping of records, data and samples.

Your background:

  • MSc / PhD in Chemistry
  • Laboratory based R&D experience is required this is a senior role so multi-year experience is required
  • Familiarity with US/EU natural aroma chemicals in the flavour and fragrance market is an advantage, although significant knowledge in industries such as pharma, medicinal or fine chemical will be considered
  • Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and a robust knowledge of organic chemistry is required
