The Opportunity
As the Area Engineering Manager (AEM) is a senior leadership role that requires extensive cross-discipline knowledge of value realisation of engineering design of systems and plant with a mind set for construction and commissioning in a nuclear environment.
Being an Engineering Manager, you will be expected to lead and advise all parties from the project team on the design processes and decision making using your own demonstrable experience in delivery with significant interpersonal skills.
The role
As the clients Area Engineering Manager you will operate within the overarching arrangements as defined by the Project Manager and end client. An area constitutes a Substation or group of substations and associated tasks.
You must be flexible and able to travel between the clients premises in West Cumbria, Warrington and Glasgow as required, with the possibility that scope may also be delivered from client partners regional offices outside the current north-west hubs. Managing teams that are remote is likely to be a necessity and travel will be expected to ensure teams are communicating well.
Agile working will be considered only on the understanding that travel between sites (as stated above) will be undertaken as required.
The projects will be Substation Replacement with the initial scope of Infrastructure enabling projects work having delivery lead by the framework. The Project Team is tasked with delivering Infrastructure projects over £5M. A number of these projects are new, and several are existing asset care projects that over the years have moved over the £5M threshold.
Your duties and responsibilities will be
- As an Engineering Manager, you will be expected to lead and advise all parties from the project team on the design processes and decision making using your own demonstrable experience in delivery with significant interpersonal skills.
- Â This project is a substation replacement project and it would be beneficial to demonstrate familiarity with such projects either within or out with the nuclear industry. In particular, experience and knowledge of some, or all, of the following disciplines would be advantageous:
- EC&I
- CS&A
- HVAC
- Safety Case
- Business Case
- Space Management / BIM
- Extensive knowledge and experience in delivery of major capex projects for construction with an expertise in one or more specialist areas of engineering (as defined above).
- Leadership in engineering function.
- Custodian of resources.
- A record of successful delivery, influencing professional engineers, and provision of strategic guidance across a portfolio of projects and programmes.
You will have the following qualifications & experience
- Extensive post-graduate industrial/practical experience of designated skill set possibly within the nuclear industry but certainly within a related transferrable industry such as the oil and gas processing/refining sector or water treatment arena for examples.
- Degree qualified and Chartered Engineer.
- You must be able to communicate at all levels, have a drive to deliver and be able to specify appropriate design requirements for both current and potential developments.
- CDM qualified.
- Experience of previous substation delivery is preferential.
- Experience of and ability to manage early stages of project engineering delivery, including the development of clear business cases and justifications for investment.
- Familiarity with and application of current standards within their own skill area and an overarching appreciation of multi-discipline design interactions and interfaces, particularly with CE&I and CS&A capabilities.
- Excellent working knowledge of appropriate CAE system including previous experience of establishing and leading a BIM enabled project.
- Evidence of design capability and leading a multi-discipline team.
- Confidence and demonstrable capability to be able to work with minimal supervision to meet end outcomes or clearly and defined targets and engage with and challenge all parties.
- Ability to work within NEC3 contractual mechanisms and effectively manage milestone delivery and KPIs.
- Extensive experience developing estimates and schedules for new projects.
- Understanding of Project Management principles and use of EV tools (CPI/SPI) to identify and resolve progress issues.
- Good understanding of change control management.
It's great if you also have the following
- Experience of working within nuclear or highly regulated industry.
- Good working knowledge of MS Office products.
- Familiarity with industry standard planning and project controls software e.g., Primavera P6, MS project.
- Must be able to obtain P1/P4 Pass and SC-Clearance.
