Scrub Technician

The Scrub Technician main functions will be coordinating and assisting surgical training events, setting up the laboratory-facility event space with relevant surgical equipment, and supporting the day-to-day running during events.

  • Salary – up to £35k
  • 26 days holiday + bank holiday (or time-in-lieu)

Location: Newbury, United Kingdom (on-site) – this role is 100% office based.

Hours per Week: Working hours – flexi-time; Mainly weekdays, but expected evening and weekend rota.

Scrub Technician Key Responsibilities:

  • To be a ‘Person Designated’ on the HTA license.
  • Build key relationships internally and externally to provide technical services to the facility, sourcing of materials, consumables and equipment as required and directed by the Designated Individual and wider team colleagues.
  • Lead the organisation and set up of the facility for external course providers using the facility, e.g. set up/clear down, laying out specimens and related administration.
  • Oversee the delivery and preparation of human tissue within the facility and assist other staff and clients in the creation of pro-sections for teaching purposes.
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and procedures, ensuring compliance and use of safe working practices and best practice is adhered to, inclusive of ensuring human material is stored safely, with dignity and ensure the respect of donors is maintained at all times.
  • Organise the reception and disposal of the human tissue according to the requirements of the HT Act 2004.
  • Assist with the updating of SOP’s, risk assessments, audits and compliance documentation for all aspects of the Anatomy Laboratory activities and facilities maintaining HTA standards applicable to all licensable activities carried out within the facility.
  • Undertake other technical duties as required including maintaining clean and hygienic conditions, conducting regular maintenance checks, reporting faults and arranging repairs, monitoring and organising resource requirements.
  • Take responsibility as the radiation protection supervisor, completing appropriate training.
  • To undertake training in accordance with HTA regulations, as and when required.

Essential Qualifications;

  • Degree, HNC, A level, NVQ3 or equivalent standard in the relevant specialist area; Or
  • Broad practical experience in a relevant technical or scientific role.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Membership of The Institute for Anatomical Science (IAS), BSc Degree in Anatomy or similar

Essential Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability and experience of handling human tissue and and producing pro-sections, or be willing to learn
  • Comprehensive understanding of Health and Safety Legislation and best practice
  • Confident user of Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Experience in a HTA licensed anatomy lab, mortuary, funeral home, laboratory or similar environment
  • Able to undertake frequent manual handling as this is a physically demanding role.
  • Able to deliver excellent service in compliance with SOPs and Risk Assessments
  • Proven high level of planning and organisation skills and resource management
  • Proven skills in the effective management of people in a laboratory environment
  • A commitment to delivering an excellent service to stakeholder/users
  • Problem solving approach, able to take the initiative
  • Knowledge and Experience - Desirable
  • Knowledge of HTA legislation, compliance, protocols and procedures
  • Practical experience which is directly relevant to the activity to be authorised by the HTA licence
  • Experience with orthopaedic/spine surgery
