GSL Education are seeking a dedicated Science Technician to join a vibrant secondary school in Newham. This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled individual to provide essential technical support to science teachers and help enhance practical learning experiences. This role is ideal for a meticulous and well-organised individual who thrives in a dynamic and fast-paced school environment.

Role Overview:

As a Science Technician, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the Science Department by ensuring that laboratories are well-equipped, safe and fully prepared for practical lessons. Your expertise will enable students to engage in hands-on experiments, develop critical thinking skills and deepen their scientific understanding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and set up scientific apparatus, materials and chemicals for practical lessons across Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, calibrated and stored safely, following health and safety regulations.
  • Support teachers and students during laboratory experiments, ensuring procedures are carried out efficiently and safely.
  • Conduct routine stock checks, ordering and replenishing supplies as necessary to maintain laboratory resources.
  • Assist in the safe disposal of hazardous substances in compliance with COSHH regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and hazard-free laboratory environment, adhering to school policies and risk assessments.
  • Provide technical guidance to students on correct laboratory procedures and the safe use of equipment.
  • Collaborate with science teachers to develop engaging and innovative practical experiments that enhance student learning.

Requirements of the Science Technician:

  • A scientific background, ideally with a degree or diploma in a science-related discipline.
  • Previous experience as a Science Technician within an educational setting is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment maintenance and health and safety regulations.
  • Fafamiliarity with COSHH and CLEAPSS guidelines for handling chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks efficiently.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a proactive approach to laboratory support.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
