We are seeking a fresh-thinking Prototype Design Specialist to join the Cluster Design & Innovation team at DS Smith's Fordham site. You will support the Sales and Design & Innovation teams by creating prototypes-both plain and digitally printed-that meet and exceed customer expectations.

This position is an excellent entry point into a career in design, offering hands-on experience with the end-to-end design process and exposure to industry-leading CAD software. You will work closely with various teams, ensuring prototypes are delivered accurately and on time while adhering to high standards of quality and innovation.

Role: Design Specialist

Location: DS Smith, Fordham Rd, Fordham, Newmarket, CB8 7TX, United Kingdom

Pay: £19.70 per hour (no overtime)

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Mon - Fri, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, unpaid breaks)

Contract Duration: Until 31st March 2025 with a possibility of extension

Interview Process: Face-to-face interviews

Start Date: ASAP

Responsibilities:

  • Use CAD design tools to create accurate prototypes.
  • Collaborate with internal design teams (Design for Implementation, Design for Creative, and Innovation Specialists) to bring creative concepts to life.
  • Maintain and update centralised sample hubs and design spreadsheets.
  • Ensure deadlines are met while maintaining high standards and attention to detail.
  • Use IT tools such as Excel and other design platforms effectively.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience with design tools, preferably CAD (training provided for candidates with no prior CAD experience).
  • Attention to detail
  • Recognised Packaging Industry Qualification or equivalent experience (desirable).
  • Understanding of corrugated materials, perforations, and prototype creation processes.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with platform-sharing tools and applications.
  • Previous experience in a similar role is advantageous but not essential.
  • A proactive team player with energy, enthusiasm, and a passion for design.
