Electrical Design Engineer job purpose
The primary purpose of the Electrical Design Engineer role is to design and develop machines and conveyor systems to the specified brief and produce the associated technical documentation e.g. wiring diagrams, calculations, bill of materials, risk assessments, etc.
Electrical Design Engineer key duties & responsibilities
- Design and develop machines and systems to specified brief.
- Produce wiring diagrams in accordance with company CAD standards.
- Produce technical documentation in accordance with company standards.
- Manage drawings, bill of materials, and technical documents using company systems.
- Undertake peer reviews of colleagues’ work (wiring diagrams, calcs, documentation, etc.)
- Ensure design compliance with project brief, relevant standards, and regulations.
- Carry out analysis of designs with a view to improving safety, DfMA, and functionality.
- Undertake site visits and surveys to support successful delivery of projects.
- Provide support to other areas of the business when engineering knowledge is required.
- Provide support and guidance to junior team members when required.
- Support the development of processes to improve efficiency and project delivery.
Electrical Design Engineer key skills & attributes
- Good 2D CAD software knowledge (EPLAN preferred) (essential)
- Good knowledge of wiring diagrams and drafting standards (essential)
- Basic PDM system knowledge (Autodesk Vault preferred) (desirable)
- Good understanding of the design process, and its associated documentation (essential)
- Good knowledge of machinery design standards and regulations (essential)
- Good understanding of electrical design principles (essential)
- Basic understanding of mechanical design principles (desirable)
- Good knowledge of automation and conveyor systems (desirable)
- Good knowledge of electrical control panel design (essential)
- Good knowledge of PLC’s, MCC’s, HMI’s (desirable)
- Good understanding of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) (essential)
- Basic understanding of checking designs, calculations, technical docs (redline markup) (essential)
- Qualified in a relevant design or engineering discipline (HNC, degree, etc.) (desirable)
- Basic knowledge of workload and project planning (desirable)
- Proficient at using Microsoft Office applications (essential)
- Ability to clearly communicate design ideas (essential)
- Ability to mentor and guide junior colleagues (desirable)
- Ability to cope with the pressure of deadlines (essential)
