The Company: A leading provider in testing equipment is seeking a motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join their growing team. This business specializes in designing and manufacturing mechanical machines used in universities and research facilities worldwide. With in-house capabilities for design, manufacturing, and testing, they produce a variety of testing machinery, ranging from materials testing equipment to aerodynamics and fluid mechanics systems. Their niche market presence makes this an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to engage in diverse, hands-on projects.

With around 90 employees, including a strong production team and a multi-disciplinary engineering team, the company has a friendly and collaborative work environment. Recently becoming employee-owned, they have a culture that encourages input and growth from all team members.

The Role: As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a crucial role in product design and development, engaging in a wide variety of projects that support the creation of machinery. This is an opportunity to work on projects from concept through to production and testing, with significant time spent on CAD design and development. You’ll be working closely with a team of engineers and technicians, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Researching new products, selecting components, and designing equipment
  • Producing detailed production drawings using SolidWorks, including 3D modelling and 2D drawings for manufacturing.
  • Developing user guides and supporting sales with technical information.
  • Supporting the assembly of components, producing testing procedures, and ensuring product quality.
  • Engaging in a hands-on approach with an 80% focus on CAD work.
  • Working on sheet metal designs, machine panels, frames, and sourcing necessary parts like motors and couplings.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A proactive and enthusiastic Mechanical Design Engineer with previous experience in a design role, preferably within mechanical or product design.
  • Strong hands-on skills in CAD design, with experience using SolidWorks or comparable software.
  • An individual who is self-motivated, eager to learn, and able to understand not only how a product is designed but why it functions the way it does.
  • A degree in engineering is ideal, but consideration will be given to those with significant relevant experience.
  • A dynamic individual who is keen to innovate, think outside the box, and contribute fresh ideas.

The Benefits:

  • Competitive Salary Package: £35k - £45k, depending on experience.
  • Working Hours: 8:00am – 4:30pm (Mon-Thu) with an early finish on Fridays (8:00am – 1:00pm).
  • Holiday: 26 days of annual leave + bank holidays, plus an additional day for every 3 years of service.
  • Pension & Profit Share: 6% pension contributions and profit-sharing bonuses.
  • Flexible Start/Finish Times: Ability to adjust start times if beneficial
  • Training & Development: On-the-job coaching to support your growth and development within the team.
