As an HGV Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and servicing heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), including bin lorries and various other vehicles and equipment that come into the council's garage. This role is critical in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the council's fleet.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Vehicle Maintenance and Repair: Perform routine inspections, scheduled maintenance, and repairs on various HGVs, including bin lorries and other council vehicles.
  • Diagnostics: Use diagnostic equipment and software to identify mechanical and electrical faults in vehicles and determine appropriate repair methods.
  • Servicing: Carry out comprehensive servicing of HGVs and other vehicles, ensuring all work complies with legal and manufacturer standards.
  • Emergency Repairs: Respond promptly to breakdowns and emergencies, providing roadside assistance and repairs as needed.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure all vehicles meet safety standards and are compliant with relevant regulations, including MOTs and regular safety checks.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of all inspections, maintenance, and repairs conducted, including parts used and labor times.
  • Tool and Equipment Management: Ensure all tools and diagnostic equipment are maintained and in good working order, and report any faults or issues.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with other technicians, supervisors, and council staff to ensure efficient workflow and vehicle turnaround times.
  • Training and Development: Stay up-to-date with industry developments, attend training sessions, and adapt to new technologies and methods as required.
  • Health and Safety: Adhere to all health and safety regulations and protocols, maintaining a safe working environment for yourself and others.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • NVQ Level 2 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent.
  • Proven experience working as an HGV Technician, preferably within a council or municipal environment.
  • Strong knowledge of HGV maintenance, repair procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Experience with bin lorries and other specialist vehicles is desirable.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools and interpret results to resolve issues efficiently.
  • Valid UK driving license, with an HGV category preferred.
